			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I’m glad to announce a beta version of the <a href="http://www.foursquare.com">Foursquare</a> app for Windows phones – WinMoSquare. </p>
<p><strong>Prerequisites</strong></p>
<p>The app is only available for touch screen Windows phones today. The .NET Compact Framework v3.5 is a pre-requisite for you to be able to run the application on the phone. You’d also need a phone that runs either Windows Mobile 6.1 or a Windows Mobile 6.5.</p>
<p><strong>Get me them goods</strong></p>
<p>You can get the goods by emailing <a href="mailto:admin@touchality.com">admin@touchality.com</a> or submitting your email address in this webform: <a href="http://touchality.com/WinMoSquare/">http://touchality.com/WinMoSquare/</a></p>
<p><strong>Futures</strong><span id="more-176"></span></p>
<p>This is a beta. We definitely want to add features to expose the leaderboard, add new friends on the fly, and incorporate any new APIs that Foursquare may expose. There are also plans to submit this application to the <a href="http://developer.windowsphone.com/Marketplace.aspx">Windows Marketplace for Mobile</a>, and that will happen as soon as we hit v1 of the app and we’re confident that we’re beyond a beta.</p>
<p><strong>Demo</strong></p>
<p>Here I’ve installed WinMoSquare on an <a href="http://www.htc.com/europe/product/hd2/overview.html">HTC HD2</a>. I’ll let the screen captures do the talking as far as the functionality of the app itself goes:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After four and a half years as in the field organization of Microsoft an Evangelist, I’ve decided to move jobs within the company. I’ll be moving to <strong>the Windows Mobile team</strong> as a <strong>Product Manager</strong>, helping shape the <strong>application development experience</strong> for our mobile platform among the <strong>startup and student audiences</strong> around the world. My job will be to participate (or help people participate)&#160; in as many events as possible and expose people to the possibilities on these devices.</p>
<h4>Why now?</h4>
<p>While <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/bizspark">BizSpark</a> has been a roaring success, and I could do broad marketing and evangelism for as long as I live, for the last couple of years I have been wanting to move back to focus more on a single product. BizSpark served as the platform for me to spread my wings and really lead a program for the US subsidiary, and I learned a lot along the way. In fact, if it weren’t for the success that we’d seen there, my good friend <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/lokeuei">Loke Uei Tan</a> would not have tapped me on the shoulder and referred me to the job.</p>
<p>It should be no surprise that mobile is a very hot area. My good friend, Kedric Van de Carr (now with <a href="http://www.smaato.com">Smaato</a>), who is very involved in the mobile community in the Valley, has been telling me for months about how hot the mobile industry is and how it’s going to grow. The numbers don’t lie.<span id="more-163"></span></p>
<p>If you recall my post about <a href="http://www.artificialignorance.net/blog/microsoft/the-microsoft-career-discussion/">the Microsoft Career Discussion</a>, Microsoft is extremely supportive of your career plans and how you want to progress. I burned into my career plan that at some point in the near future, I wanted to move into product management and that I would like to learn more about businesses worldwide. This is step 1 in realizing that career goal.</p>
<h4>Windows (Mobile) Phone? Really?</h4>
<p>Yes, really. <strong>I won’t be necessarily the first to admit that we have a big battle ahead of us</strong>. We <strong>have</strong> been quiet on what we’ve been working on, but I’ll do my best to change that and be transparent when and where we can. The iPhone is a phenomenal device, Android is hitting its stride with its second generation, Blackberry and Nokia have strong footholds with their loyal audiences and Palm is resurging. <a href="http://gigaom.com/2009/08/19/microsoft-mobile-strategy-fail/">Om is writing us off</a> because of <a href="http://gigaom.com/2008/10/15/why-windows-mobile-is-in-trouble/">discussions he’s had with a manufacturer</a>. But Microsoft is not one to sit back and just watch, and we have a kick-butt story with 6.5 and beyond. </p>
<h4>What would you do, if you were me?</h4>
<p>I know everyone’s got a ton of opinions in this area, and there’s seems to be <a href="http://www.techmeme.com/090819/p7#a090819p7">a fair amount of speculation</a>. I completely understand that we could be doing a better job of communicating about our strategy and the future, and I’ll work on that. But what is your take? What can we do to help you better leverage the Windows Phone experience from an application or a consumer perspective?</p>
<h4>Want my old job?</h4>
<p>Oh, and, do you know anyone who’d want my old job? You’ll get our program manage Startup oriented evangelism efforts (BizSpark). If you’re interested, and live in the SF Bay Area, <a href="mailto:anand.iyer@microsoft.com">drop me a note</a>.</p>
<p>I’m really excited about my new job. And if you’re a mobile app developer, hit me up!</p>

<h4><em><strong>[Update 1/29/2010 : Yes, several several months later, we now have a public beta for you to play with. Please see this blog post for more info: </strong></em></h4>
<p>         <em><strong><br />
<h4><em><strong></strong><a title="http://www.artificialignorance.net/blog/windows-mobile/winmosquare-foursquare-for-windows-phone-now-in-beta/" href="http://www.artificialignorance.net/blog/windows-mobile/winmosquare-foursquare-for-windows-phone-now-in-beta/"><strong>http://www.artificialignorance.net/blog/windows-mobile/winmosquare-foursquare-for-windows-phone-now-in-beta/</strong></a></em><em><strong>]</strong></em></h4>
<p>           </strong></em></strong></em></strong></em><span id="more-162"></span>
<p>It was a few weeks ago, my friends and I got to <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/polkers-gourmet-burgers-san-francisco">Polkers</a>, my favorite Ahi Tuna/Niçoise salad place, and I had found out in just a few seconds of being seated that I had just been “ousted as mayor” &#8211; that’s when it first occurred to me to build a Foursquare app for Windows Mobile. My friend <a href="http://www.greg-dean.com">Greg</a> had stolen “the mayorship” from me while I was sitting there still trying to just access <a href="http://m.playfoursquare.com">http://m.playfoursquare.com</a> on IE. I was starting to get really tired of being the odd one out (without an iPhone or the cool apps) &#8211; it was fun at first being different – I’d get the occasional, “and what apps can YOUR phone run?” It lasted a while, but the attention was undeserving. My friends <a href="http://www.jacobmullins.com">Jacob</a>, <a href="http://parislemon.com">MG</a> and <a href="http://www.greg-dean.com">Greg</a> had put Foursquare on a pedestal and had started becoming “mayors” of every hip venue in San Francisco. I was starting to feel underprivileged. So I sat down last Friday and decided to crank out a Foursqure Windows Mobile app. </p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/anandiyer/status/2916638944"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="4squareWinMo" border="0" alt="4squareWinMo" src="http://www.artificialignorance.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/images/FoursquarenativelyonWindowsMobileyoubetc_134E8/4squareWinMo.jpg" width="346" height="185" /></a> </p>
<p>Yes, it’s true. It exists.</p>
<p><strong>What?</strong></p>
<p>So what I have is a VERY rudimentary first cut of Foursquare on Windows Mobile. First the caveats:</p>
<ol>
<li>I’m not a designer. My UX/UI skills, well, they don’t exist. I love plain text (over rich text/HTML) and I still use <a href="http://vim.org">vi</a> when I can. So please don’t judge the app based on its looks :( </li>
<li>I’m hardly a programmer. I have only been coding sporadically over the last few years, but I try to stay on top of programming trends. </li>
</ol>
<p>That said,</p>
<ul>
<li>This app is built on .NET Compact Framework 3.5 and written in C# (with some bits in unmanaged C++). </li>
<li>The app uses nearby cell towers (like Google Maps) to try to get a rough idea as to where you are – it doesn’t currently use GPS (see below for why). </li>
<li>It utilizes Foursquare’s APIs to to present you with a list of venues you can check into. </li>
<li>The app currently uses Basic Authentication for authorization (I know, frownie face). Trust me when I tell you that I built this app in about 4 days total. </li>
<li>You can search for venues in your city (or city area) if the venue you’re looking for doesn’t come up when you first run the app. </li>
<li>Here&#8217;s a demo of the app working on a prototype 6.5 Windows Phone: </li>
</ul>
<blockquote></blockquote>
<blockquote><div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:{7D7E1B1B-BB15-44b5-AC22-DF49F6B00FD3}:845fe727-ebfb-4c40-a334-d50a5f70e21e" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent">   <iframe src="http://silverlight.services.live.com/invoke/10723/Foursquare on Windows Phone/iframe.html" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width:619px;height:474px" width="619" height="474"></iframe> </div>
<p><em>PS: In the video, I don’t show you the login screen. I had the “remember me” option checked the last time I’d logged in so I didn’t have to enter my credentials again. </em></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>What doesn’t it do?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>The app doesn’t use GPS to locate you, today. This is a simple fix and I’ll add it soon. I wanted to take on the challenge of geolocating my position using cell towers first (and the GPS in certain Windows Mobile devices is, well, crap). The app currently waits to locate you before it does anything at all, and if it takes five minutes to locate you, well that’s just unacceptable. I’ll add the option to use GPS in the background and locate you in the near future. </li>
<li>It doesn’t currently tell you where your friends are. Teh suck – I know. </li>
<li>It can’t currently switch cities for you. Also teh suck. </li>
<li>It doesn’t support push notifications (big beast). </li>
<li>It doesn’t currently do OAuth. Trying to Base64 encode HMAC-SHA1 in .NET CF is not a trivial thing (at this time). </li>
</ul>
<p>It’s my goal to support every API that Foursquare makes available. Honest.</p>
<p><strong>When?</strong></p>
<p>If you’d like to use the app, please <a href="mailto:anand.iyer@microsoft.com">send me an email</a> for now, and I’ll email you the CAB file some time in the next week. I’m just not comfortable throwing this out there yet – it’s just too early. I don’t want to leave you with a bad experience. I want some of my closest ‘softie friends to test it out first on some of the major carriers and I want to ensure that the app just plain works for you.</p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/anandiyer/statuses/1346636244"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="foursquare" border="0" alt="foursquare" src="http://www.artificialignorance.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/images/FoursquarenativelyonWindowsMobileyoubetc_134E8/foursquare.jpg" width="316" height="164" /></a> <a href="http://twitter.com/jacobmullins/statuses/1346646909"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="4square4life" border="0" alt="4square4life" src="http://www.artificialignorance.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/images/FoursquarenativelyonWindowsMobileyoubetc_134E8/4square4life.jpg" width="368" height="157" /></a></p>
<p>And not to forget, once again, I was wrong (and Jake was right). I thought Foursquare would disappear into the ether after <a href="http://www.sxsw.com">SXSW</a>. <strong>I was wrong</strong> &#8211; <strong>Foursquare’s a killer app and is here to stay</strong>.</p>
<p>I’m happy to host it and take care of it for now. This is probably the first time the Foursquare folks are hearing of this, so after a conversation with them we’ll figure out how this app needs to be managed.</p>
<p><strong>Disclaimer(s)</strong></p>
<p>This is <strong><u>*NOT*</u></strong> a Microsoft sanctioned project or product. My employer has nothing to do with this app and should not be held liable for anything, ever.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few days ago, <a href="http://on10.net/blogs/sarahintampa/Pandora-Comes-To-Windows-Mobile/">Sarah Perez reported that Pandora was available on Windows Mobile</a>. I was pretty excited to see this, only to find out <img height="228" alt="Palm Treo Pro" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3143/3112967447_d9927753ba_o.jpg" width="240" align="right" />later that the application was not supported on my new <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/products/smartphones/treopro/">Palm Treo Pro</a>. However today, my colleague Eric Strait pointed me to <a href="http://mq.roeiboot.com/apps/pandora.cab">this CAB download</a>. I just tried it, and it worked fabulously. I&#8217;m not certain this is an &quot;official&quot; Pandora release however.</p>
<p><a href="http://pandora.com">Pandora</a> is a beautiful application that is essentially an internet radio station with multiple channels. Pandora is a Valley crowd favorite, and has risen to the top of the list of the <a href="http://blog.pandora.com/pandora/archives/2008/12/2000000_pandora.html">most downloaded applications on the the iPhone</a>. <span id="more-17"></span></p>
<p>For my mobile music needs, I&#8217;ve been using <a href="http://imeem.com">Imeem</a> over <a href="http://www.skyfire.com">Skyfire</a> on my Palm Treo Pro. A native application by Pandora is definitely welcome. The application is very simple which it makes it very easy to use.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a video demonstrating the application in action on the Motorola Q9c:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most impressive <a href="http://www.demo.com/conferences/demo2008.html">DEMO</a>s I’d seen at DEMO last year was <a href="http://www.skyfire.com">Skyfire</a>’s. For those of us who have had smartphones with limited web browsing capabilities (like Pocket IE with Windows Mobile), Skyfire will forever change the way you use your smartphone. Today Skyfire announced that it has opened up <a href="http://www.skyfire.com/about/beta">its beta</a> to all US residents.</p>
<p>Here’s a demo of Skyfire in action:</p>
<div class="wlWriterSmartContent" id="scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:79b34d17-60e4-4a63-ba93-cdceaadf008e" style="padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px">
<div id="dc93b143-a2b8-4f33-9846-628af3ad6169" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;"><span id="more-32"></span>
<div><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mWUoxiLZFc" target="_new"><img src="http://site449.mysite4now.net/truecalling/blog/wp-content/uploads/images/Skyfirenowinpublicbeta_E857/videoe739224e4e45.jpg" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('dc93b143-a2b8-4f33-9846-628af3ad6169'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &quot;&lt;div&gt;&lt;object width=\&quot;425\&quot; height=\&quot;355\&quot;&gt;&lt;param name=\&quot;movie\&quot; value=\&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/4mWUoxiLZFc&amp;hl=en\&quot;&gt;&lt;\/param&gt;&lt;embed src=\&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/4mWUoxiLZFc&amp;hl=en\&quot; type=\&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&quot; width=\&quot;425\&quot; height=\&quot;355\&quot;&gt;&lt;\/embed&gt;&lt;\/object&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&quot;;" alt=""/></a></div>
</div>
</div>
<p>Skyfire is not a conventional mobile web browser, it’s more of an application that lets you view and consume web content. For example, the notion of having to install plugins for your browsers, like Silverlight or Flash doesn’t exist with Skyfire. When you launch Skyfire on your phone, you are logged in to their servers. A proxy sitting on Skyfire’s servers intercepts web traffic flowing to your device that is then Skyfire-optimized. Skyfire’s proxy servers are responsible for dealing with dynamic content on their end, and what you get is a stream of interactive and dynamic “images” and audio on your phone. You’re probably wondering, how can a cluttered and dynamic website, like <a href="http://www.facebook.com">Facebook</a> for example, render on my tiny phone screen? One of my favorite features on Skyfire is the Zoom feature. You can selectively zoom in and zoom out of select portions of the web site.</p>
<p>A lot of articles that went out today talking about Skyfire’s announcement talk about the lack of a good browser on WinMo devices, unlike Safari for the iPhone. But something I’m curious about is how many iPhone users still actively use Safari? With the number of applications for the iPhone and over a <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2008/09/09/apple-app-store-over-100000000-downloads-in-60-days/">100 million installs of different applications in just the first couple of months</a>, I can only imagine that the need for a Safari on the iPhone has diminished. Although Apple will likely <em>not</em> let Skyfire into their App Store, Skyfire will get plenty of traction from the other non-1% of the smartphones out there. While Apple’s App Store concept is innovative, it doesn’t exist for other smartphone ecosystems yet and we still rely heavily on the mobile browser.</p>
<p>The question then arises – what content can Skyfire <em>not</em> handle? I’ll be honest, I don’t know right now. There haven’t been webpages that I’ve wanted to visit that Skyfire hasn’t been able to handle. The only catch is that you’d have to have a phone number associated with your Skyfire account, you can’t just your WiFi card on your phone to get on the internet. And aside from that, the only other limitation is your handset itself – for me, I find it a little kludgy with my front rotary scroll wheel to navigate content.</p>
<p>Skyfire’s beta product definitely drains my phone’s battery life. I’ve noticed my Blackjack 2 heat up and lose battery life fairly quickly as I use sites like <a href="http://imeem.com">Imeem</a> to stream and listen to Music. The one other thing I’d wary of is security – remember that Skyfire’s proxy servers stream the data coming from a website to your phone, and vice-versa. </p>
<p>Today, Skyfire supports Windows Mobile and Symbian devices. <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/company/skyfire">Crunchbase</a> tells us that Skyfire has raised $17.8M in funding from <a href="http://www.matrixpartners.com/">Matrix Partners</a>, <a href="http://www.trinityventures.com/">Trinity Ventures</a> and <a href="http://www.lightspeedvp.com/">Lightspeed Ventures</a>. Get Skyfire now!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The mobile-based video streaming company, <a href="http://qik.com">Qik</a>, has announced support for even more <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/default.mspx">Windows Mobile</a> devices. Over the last few days, <a href="http://qik.com/bhaskar">Bhaskar</a> and <a href="http://qik.com/jackie">Jackie</a> announced support for the following devices:</p>

<li><a href="http://omnia.samsungmobile.com/">Samsung Omnia</a> </li>
</ul>
<p>Qik&#8217;s decision to support Windows Mobile based HTC devices is a very smart one &#8211; earlier this year, <a href="http://htc.com">HTC</a> announced that they had shipped over 2 million units of their Touch line of devices. Also, around 18 million licenses of Windows Mobile were licensed in Microsoft&#8217;s fiscal year ending June 30, 2008.<span id="more-39"></span></p>
<p>Not long ago, <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/aniyer/archive/2008/06/06/breaking-qik-announces-support-for-windows-mobile-phones-motorola-q-and-samsung-blackjack.aspx">Qik had announced support for the Samsung Blackjack 2, the Motorola Q9h/Q9c</a>. </p>
<p>On a related note, I&#8217;m happy to announce that Qik and Windows Mobile will be partnering to bring live video experiences from this year&#8217;s <a href="http://www.techcrunch50.com">TechCrunch50</a> event in San Francisco. Keep an eye on the <a href="http://www.microsoftstartupzone.com">Microsoft StartupZone</a> for some live action from the event.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Technology is taking an active position in politics today. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Technology is taking an active position in politics today. Presidential candidate <a href="http://www.barackobama.com">Barack Obama</a>, for example, has been on the cutting edge using tools such as <a href="http://twitter.com/barackobama">Twitter</a> and (live) streaming announcements. Back in November 2007, Obama had announced the position of a &#8220;Chief Technology Officer&#8221;. From <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2007/11/13/exclusive-barack-obama-to-name-a-chief-technology-officer/">VentureBeat</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Obama&#8217;s CTO &#8230; would ensure government officials hold open meetings, broadcast live webcasts of those meetings, and use blogging software, wikis and open comments to communicate policies with Americans, according to the plan.&#8221;</p>
</blockquote>
<p><span id="more-51"></span>
<p>Just today, the popular blog <a href="http://techpresident.com">TechPresident</a> announced that it will be hosting a public twitter based pseudo-debate of sorts between each of the presidential candidates representatives, which will be moderated by <a href="http://www.time.com/time/swampland/">Ana Marie Cox</a> of Time (<a href="http://twitter.com/anamariecox">Ana&#8217;s twitter handle</a>). This should be extremely interesting &#8211; often times I&#8217;ve found debate participants exceed their allocated time or ramble on, but twitter restricts your tweets to be 140 characters long. So this debate should be very concise and extremely informational. From &#8220;<a href="http://www.techpresident.com/blog/entry/26569/breaking_pdf2008_hosts_obama_mccain_twitter_debate">BREAKING: PdF2008 Hosts Obama-McCain Twitter Debate</a>&#8221;: </p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pleased to announce a first for the Internet Election of 2008: Starting tonight, a designated representative of both of the major presidential campaigns are going to participate in a free-wheeling debate on technology and government &#8230; </p>
<p>The debate is an initiative of Personal Democracy Forum and is being launched in tandem with next week&#8217;s <a href="http://www.personaldemocracy.com/conference">annual PdF conference</a>, which is taking place Monday and Tuesday at Rose Hall in NYC.&#8221; </p>

<p>Some time back, I&#8217;d written about how <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/aniyer/archive/2008/06/06/breaking-qik-announces-support-for-windows-mobile-phones-motorola-q-and-samsung-blackjack.aspx">Qik is paving the way for citizen journalism</a> and Qik&#8217;s new support for (select) Windows Mobile devices. When <a href="http://qik.com/bhaskar">Bhaskar Roy</a> and I chatted a few weeks ago, Bhaskar told me that he was going to be participating on a panel called &#8220;<a href="http://pdf2008.confabb.com/conferences/pdf2008/sessions/16803/details">Building and Using the World LIVE Web</a>&#8221; at the annual Personal Democracy Forum (PdF) conference, where the likes of <a href="http://www.google.com/corporate/execs.html">Vint Cerf</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Edwards">Elizabeth Edwards</a>, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/">Ariana Huffington</a>, <a href="http://www.lessig.org/">Lawrence Lessig</a> (<em>one of my favorite speakers</em>), <a href="http://www.shirky.com/">Clay Shirky</a>, <a href="http://www.craigslist.org/about/craig.newmark.html">Craig Newmark</a>, <a href="http://www.scobleizer.com">Robert Scoble</a> and many others would be speaking. We immediately thought of ways in which <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/Windowsmobile/default.mspx">Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Mobile</a> and Qik could collaborate to provide the hardware, software and services needed for some of these key political bloggers and influencers to start Qiking using Windows Mobile phones. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/lokeuei/">Loke Uei Tan</a>, Product Manager for Windows Mobile and I will be at the PdF next week. We have some interesting thoughts on how we plan on distributing a few <a href="http://www.samsungblackjack.com/">Samsung Blackjack</a> phones to some of the influencers there. But I&#8217;d really like to hear from you :</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>How would you like to see services like Qik and Windows Mobile devices being used by political journalists, bloggers, influencers etc.?</strong> </li>
<li><strong>If you are enthusiastic about politics and you had a Windows Mobile device with Qik on it, how would you use it?</strong> </li>
</ul>
<p><em>Help shape the future of technology in politics!</em></p>
<p>If you&#8217;d like to discuss this in person, please join us &#8211; on <strong>Saturday 6/21</strong>, Loke and I will be joining Bhaskar and the Qik team for a &#8220;<a href="http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/812686"><strong>Qik-up</strong></a>&#8221; in the <strong>West Village</strong>. Alternately, if you plan on attending the PdF, please <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/aniyer/archive/2007/05/31/call-anytime-seriously.aspx">give me a call</a> or twitter me @<a href="http://twitter.com/anandiyer">anandiyer</a> so that we can meet up. I want to hear from you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_journalism">Citizen journalism</a> is a growing phenomenon. The ability for us to use our phones to take pictures or shoot video using devices such as our mobile phones, and to instantly share them with the world is really quite something else. <a href="http://qik.com/video/86710">The Mars landing</a> recorded live from mission control by US Congressman <a href="http://qik.com/johnculberson">John Culberson</a>, or the <a href="http://qik.com/video/30155">opening of the World Economic Forum</a> or videos taken at <a href="http://qik.com/event/1/sxsw-interactive">SxSW</a> in Austin, are examples of videos that were streamed live from mobile phones.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.qik.com">Qik</a> is one of the leading live mobile video streaming platforms. Qik enables anyone to stream video live from their mobile phones to the web, from anywhere in the world. Today, <strong>Qik is announcing support for </strong><a href="http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/q/"><strong>the Motorola Q</strong></a><strong> and </strong><a href="http://www.samsungblackjack.com/"><strong>the Samsung Blackjack</strong></a><strong>, </strong><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx"><strong>Windows Mobile phones</strong></a>.<span id="more-53"></span></p>
<p>Qik&#8217;s usability is what makes the application extremely appealing. Users can stream live video to the Internet in just two clicks from their Windows Mobile phones, and join others as they watch online and engage in live interactive chat. Windows Mobile phones have been gaining in popularity worldwide, and Qik wants to leverage the popularity of the platform. </p>
<p>Qik has gained immense respect with the bloggerati. <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/">Michael Arrington from TechCrunch</a> (<a href="http://qik.com/techcrunch">TechCrunch</a>), <a href="http://www.scobleizer.com">Robert Scoble</a> from <a href="http://www.fastcompany.tv/">FastCompany.tv</a> (<a href="http://qik.com/scobleizer">Scobleizer</a>), <a href="http://kevinrose.com/">Kevin Rose</a> from <a href="http://digg.com">Digg</a> (<a href="http://qik.com/kevin">Kevin</a>), <a href="http://www.danielterdiman.blogspot.com/">Daniel Terdiman</a> from <a href="http://cnet.com">CNET</a> (<a href="http://qik.com/greeterdan">Qik Profile</a>) are just some who have been using Qik to live stream.</p>
<p>I look forward to continuing work with Qik to get the product to a beta form, and to support more Windows Mobile phones moving forward.</p>
<p>The alpha of the Qik runtime for Windows Mobile phones is available in a closed alpha form. Email <a href="mailto:winmo@qik.com"><strong>winmo@qik.com</strong></a> to request an invite (currently restricted to the first 50 requests, others will be added to a waitlist). <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve had my <a href="http://www.samsungmobileusa.com/blackjackII/">Samsung Blackjack II</a> for a few months now. One of the things about this phone that excited me the most was the integrated GPS. I <a href="http://www.modaco.com/content/Smartphone-Standard-News/262074/Samsung-Blackjack-II-GPS-ACTIVATED/">unlocked the GPS receiver</a> (follow the instructions on that site verbatim to unlock your GPS*) to work outside of just TeleNav. Unfortunately though, I couldn&#8217;t get <a href="http://wls.live.com/">Windows Live maps</a> to detect the GPS. So I decided to download <a href="http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/index.html">Google Maps for Mobile</a> and started using it exclusively.</p>
<p>The one thing to keep in mind is that the Windows Live App has more than just Maps to offer. It&#8217;s a full fledged &#8216;search&#8217; application with Maps as one of the features.</p>
<p>A couple of weeks ago, I found the patience (and the time) to startup Windows Live for mobile again to see if I can figure out why exactly the GPS wouldn&#8217;t work. Turns out, it was working just fine. Since, I&#8217;ve started using Windows Live Maps for Mobile and I thought I&#8217;d chart out my comparison between the 2 products. Overall, feature wise, Windows Live Maps for Mobile wins. User interface wise, Google Maps for Mobile wins.<span id="more-65"></span></p>
<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" width="806" border="0">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="135"><strong>Feature</strong></td>
<td valign="top" width="135"><strong>Winner</strong></td>
<td valign="top" width="534"><strong>Why</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">User Interface</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">Google</td>
<td valign="top" width="534">Google Maps for Mobile has a very clean, intuitive, usable, simple and pretty-looking interface. It&#8217;s looks like a trimmed down version of their regular browser client which makes it familiar. Even when you punch in to get directions, the simple &quot;Show Route&quot; and the &quot;Next&quot; and &quot;Previous&quot; commands on the map are very easy to understand and use. When you hit &quot;Next&quot; for example, the map zooms out and starts moving to the next turn or exit that needs to be taken and then zooms back in to the location where the action needs to be taken &#8211; it kinda <em>jumps</em> to the next action that needs to be taken. That is a pretty neat interface for a phone. </p>
<p>I really like the simple blue dot on Goog Maps for mobile that indicates your current location. The Windows Live Maps equivalent is not bad in that it actually gives you the direction in which you are headed. It&#8217;s not a dot. But it&#8217;s bigger and not as simple or pretty. </p>
<p>I also like the fact that when you have to look up directions, you can enter your current location in just the one single box in Google Maps. Alternately you can check the box that says use your current GPS location as your starting or your end location. </p>
<p>The UI on Windows Live Maps needs quite a lot of work. It looks like a bunch of interns put it together over the summer. :|</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">Turn by Turn directions</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">Windows Live</td>
<td valign="top" width="534">Yep, clear winner here. The GPS helps you stay on top of where you are, but as you approach a location where you need to veer from just driving straight, the phone makes a &#8216;beep&#8217; and indicates that you need to do something here. </p>
<p>Surprisingly, Google Maps for Mobile (the version I have) does not give you live turn by turn directions.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">Misc. Features</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">Windows Live</td>
<td valign="top" width="534">Windows Live definitely has a lot more features, like finding movies or finding gas prices. These are really easy to pull up using the interface. Windows Live definitely kicks butt feature-wise.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">Application Startup Time</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">Google Maps</td>
<td valign="top" width="534">Google Maps starts up in about 2 seconds. Windows Live seems to take anywhere from 8-10 seconds on my phone.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">Rerouting from your current location</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">Windows Live</td>
<td valign="top" width="534">Lets say you&#8217;re driving along, and you miss one of your turns. Windows Live will prompt you for the option to reroute you to your destination. It&#8217;s almost like a full-fledged GPS. </td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">Current Traffic conditions</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">Windows Live</td>
<td valign="top" width="534">I&#8217;ve used both applications on multiple instances and I&#8217;ve found WL Maps to be consistently accurate. This could be related to the data sources that each of these applications use to check traffic conditions. </p>
<p>For example, I was stuck on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_101">the 101</a> for a longggggggg time the other day. I think there was a high-speed car chase or something that had ended up badly. The 101 was like a giant parking lot. So I pulled out the phone to check traffic conditions. Windows Live gave me dead accurate traffic conditions whereas Google Maps was not even close. In fact, Google Maps told me that everything was a green, when I&#8217;d been averaging 0.05mph for the last 30 minutes. </td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">Finding Businesses</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">None</td>
<td valign="top" width="534">Although Windows Live Maps has a better set of features overall, neither of the two applications are consistent when it comes to finding certain businesses. </p>
<p>For example, I remember searching for &quot;Jamba Juice, San Mateo, CA&quot; on Google Maps for Mobile, and it didn&#8217;t yield anything whereas Windows Live Maps for Mobile did. In another instance, I&#8217;d searched for another business (can&#8217;t remember which one), but Goog Maps pulled it up when Windows Live Maps didn&#8217;t.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td valign="top" width="136">Find your current location without GPS</td>
<td valign="top" width="137">Google Maps</td>
<td valign="top" width="534"><a href="http://www.google.com/gmm/mylocation.html?hl=en">This feature gives you somewhat of a current location</a> for a given radius (don&#8217;t ask me what the radius is) without using your GPS. I think you&#8217;ll start to realize sooner than later that this feature is really quite useless. Because when you&#8217;re lost, you don&#8217;t want to know that you&#8217;re somewhere in 2 mile radius of something &#8211; that is just pointless. Worse, it can&#8217;t tell you which direction you&#8217;re headed in. </p>
<p>I admire that Google Maps is trying to something innovative, but the feature is really not as useful as it is fancy.</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<p>In spite of all these features, I&#8217;d warn you to consider charging your phone while you&#8217;re using the GPS. On average, I&#8217;ve noticed that my fully charged phone runs out of juice in about 45 minutes when I have the GPS turned on. Yikes!</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t wait for the next version of these apps. I think they&#8217;ll try to outdo what they have currently, which means we win!</p>
<p>&quot;<strong>ai</strong>&quot;</p>
<p>PS: Please do not use your phone while you are actually driving. </p>
<p><em>* &#8211; Neither Microsoft nor I take responsibility for this patch on your phone. Use it at your own risk.</em></p>
