DLSS 5 Leak From NBA 2K27 Hits Modders First
NBA 2K27’s early-access folder shipped a file it should not have shipped.
Renan Maniero spotted `nvngx_dlssnr.dll` on August 26. Windows labeled it NVIDIA DLSSNR 310.8.0.0. Size: 158 MB. That is roughly three times a current DLSS Super Resolution library, and most of that bulk is neural weights.
Within hours the RenoDX Discord had the same library running on Jesse Faden’s face in Control.

Nvidia had already announced DLSS 5 in March as 3D-guided neural rendering. The public reaction was ugly. Faces looked waxy. Art direction looked optional. Then the basketball game handed testers a working runtime months of press decks never did.
Official support lands with NBA 2K27 on September 3 for GeForce RTX 50-series cards and GeForce NOW. The leaked build is not that product. It is an unfinished filter with sliders Nvidia never meant players to touch.
That gap is the whole story.
What the leaked file actually contains
The “NR” suffix is neural rendering, not another Super Resolution pass.
Previous DLSS versions reconstruct pixels, generate frames, or clean ray-traced lighting from data the engine already produced. DLSS 5 sits later in the pipeline. It takes the engine’s frame plus motion vectors, depth, and material buffers, then infers lighting and surface detail the rasterizer never finished.
The leaked DLL is the inference runtime plus a 148-million-parameter FP8 model. Testers who dumped the binary found Blackwell-only code paths and an architecture gate. Ada cards were locked out until someone patched the check.
Seven style sliders appeared once RenoDX hooked the library:
- Neural renderer intensity
- Tone strength
- Local structure strength
- Skin structure strength
- Auto skin mask
- Style preset
- Structure vs smoothness bias
Those sliders exist because Nvidia told developers they would get per-object control. The leak just exposed the debug UI first.
The model does not rewrite meshes. Geometry stays the artist’s. What changes is how light sits on skin, how pores read at 4K, and how specular response behaves on hair and fabric.
That is also why it looks like a phone beauty filter when the intensity slider leaves the safe range.
Why NBA 2K27 of all games
Visual Concepts scans real athletes. Faces are the product.
Nvidia’s official pitch for the shipping game is specific: light through ears, subsurface scatter on skin, hair catch lights, without replacing the scan data. That is a narrower brief than “make Control look like a mid-journey still.”
The early-access build included the runtime before the video menu exposed a toggle. There is still no evidence the leak itself enabled DLSS 5 inside 2K27. The file was cargo. The game did not surface controls until the September 3 Game Ready driver.
For a sports sim that already lives on photoreal faces, neural rendering is less of a style collision than it is in a stylized action game. That is probably why 2K shipped first and Starfield did not.
How the Control test looked from the bench
I went through the public RenoDX clips and the 4K Control captures frame by frame, then lined them up against stock DLSS 4 Quality on the same scene.
Jesse Faden at default NR intensity looks like she slept two hours and applied a heavy skin smoother. Push skin structure toward +1 and cheekbones sharpen in a way the original texture never supported. Drop it toward −1 and she reads ten years older.
The effect is local. Background concrete and neon barely move. Character shaders eat the cost.
On an RTX 5070 Ti at native 4K, testers logged 71 fps without the filter and 35 fps with it applied only to the hero model. An RTX 5090 clip in the same scene fell from 91 to 50. That is not a rounding error. It is a second neural pass on top of an already expensive frame.
Cyberpunk numbers from later ports were similar. Raster 1440p on a 5070 went 138 to 68. Path tracing 71 to 45.
HDR handling in the leaked path is messy. Several testers reported broken tone mapping until they forced SDR. VRAM climbed about 1 GB each time someone toggled the effect in RenoDX. That smell is a leak in the wrapper, not necessarily the model, but you feel it after three A/B swaps.
Games the community already abused
The list grew past a dozen titles in 48 hours.
Control was first because Remedy’s character pipeline is clean and the camera sits close. Skyrim turned Nord faces into department-store mannequins. Cloud Strife in FF7 Rebirth lost the spike-hair silhouette and gained a wax-museum jaw. GTA San Andreas looked like a 2004 game wearing a 2026 Instagram preset, which is funny until you remember the art style was the joke.
Red Dead 2 and The Last of Us Part II took the hit more gracefully. Skin already carries pore maps. Neural rendering had something real to amplify instead of inventing structure on a flat bake.
Counter-Strike is on the “do not bother” list for a simpler reason. DLL injection and anti-cheat do not share a room.
If you already fight frame time on a midrange card, this is the wrong week to also chase [Elden Ring lossless scaling](https://www.artificialignorance.net/2026/09/elden-ring-lossless-scaling-settings.html) on the same box. Stacking external frame gen on a filter that already halves the base rate is how you invent input lag.
Leaked mod versus shipping DLSS 5 versus DLSS 4
| Use case | Leaked DLSS 5 + RenoDX | Official DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 | DLSS 4 Super Res + FG |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Setup effort | High — DLL swap, Discord build, possible 40-series patch | Low — new driver, in-game toggle, F9 | Low — already in most PC ports |
| Visual intent | Whatever the sliders decide | Developer-tuned faces and materials | Reconstruct existing pixels |
| 4K cost on 5070 Ti class | ~50% in Control character tests | Nvidia quotes 50–60% before Multi Frame Gen | Usually a net gain |
| GPU support | 50-series native, 40-series unofficial | RTX 50-series and GeForce NOW only | 20/30/40/50-series |
| Art-style risk | High in stylized games | Constrained by Visual Concepts | Low |
| Multiplayer safety | Unsafe — injection | Supported in 2K27 | Supported where the game allows |
Read the Nvidia 2K27 charts carefully. The 370 fps 4K Ultra number on a 5090 includes Multi Frame Generation at high multipliers. The neural pass itself is still expensive. Frame gen is how they put the number back on the box.
Hands-on workflow if you insist on testing the leak
I am not going to walk through injection steps for live multiplayer titles. If you are on a single-player offline build, this is the shape of the process testers used.
- Extract `nvngx_dlssnr.dll` from the 2K27 early-access directory. Confirm version 310.8.0.0 and the August 26 timestamp.
- Use the RenoDX build that explicitly lists DLSSNR, not a random ReShade preset from last year.
- Start with character-only masks. Full-frame intensity is how you get the “AI slop” screenshots that started the pile-on.
- Cap the intensity slider well below the default the debug UI ships with. The default is a demo, not a production look.
- Lock the game to SDR until you confirm HDR metadata survives the pass.
- Watch VRAM after every toggle. Restart the process if usage ratchets up.
- Benchmark a still camera first, then a moving one. Temporal stability is the first thing that falls apart on older assets.
Blackwell cards just work. Ada cards need the community patch that strips the architecture check. Ampère and older are a science project.
Pro Tip: Before you blame the model for melted faces, dump the game’s native roughness and cavity maps. A lot of “DLSS 5 ruined this character” shots are the network amplifying a 2K bake that was never meant to be lit like a film still.
The honest bottlenecks
This is not free quality.
The performance hole is real on current weights. Nvidia says six months of optimization took the demo from two 5090s to one 50-series card. That is progress. It is not “turn it on and forget the fps counter.”
Official support stops at Blackwell Tensor cores. Modders proved Ada can execute the math. Nvidia has not promised a fallback path. If you bought a 4080 last winter, you are watching this from the sideline unless you run unofficial code.
Stylized games fight the filter. Control’s mid-century brutalism and Skyrim’s painted faces were never trained as the target domain. Sports scans were. That domain gap is why 2K27 is a better first ship vehicle than a fantasy RPG.
Anti-cheat will treat the leak as malware. Do not take this into ranked anything.
Driver and game updates can invalidate the wrapper overnight. A shipping 2K27 patch that removes the orphaned DLL is the obvious next move.
And thermals get worse when a second neural pass sits on the same die. If your 50-series card already rides the power limit, clean the intake path before you enable the heaviest preset. A choked filter makes this look like a GPU defect. It is usually dust. Our notes on how to clean a dusty GPU exist for exactly this week.
What Nvidia changed after the March backlash
The March reveal put generated lighting on faces people already knew. The internet called it slop. Jensen said players did not understand it.
SIGGRAPH and Gamescom walks were quieter. Three model tiers. Per-object masks. Developers can spare a hero face and still enrich a metal bench. Official 2K27 captures are milder than the RenoDX sliders at max.
That matters. The leak showed the raw network. The shipping toggle is a directed grade.
Still, the cost profile did not magically vanish. Nvidia’s own language puts the hit at 50 to 60 percent before frame generation recovers the number. If your monitor is 60 Hz, you may not care. If you bought a 240 Hz panel to feel the extra frames, you will.
Handheld and streaming users sit in a different queue. GeForce NOW Ultimate is the official off-PC path. A Steam Deck will not run this locally. If your living-room setup is Deck plus a portable monitor, stay on DLSS 4 or FSR and wait for cloud.
Same advice if you were comparing Cyberpunk on a handheld versus a real PC. Neural rendering wants Blackwell memory bandwidth, not a 15-watt APU.
Practical setup for the official 2K27 path
This is the clean route on September 3.
1. Install the Game Ready driver that Nvidia timed for 9 p.m. Pacific.
2. Launch NBA 2K27 on an RTX 50-series desktop or laptop.
3. Open Video Settings and enable DLSS Neural Rendering.
4. Use F9 in gameplay and replays if you want a live A/B.
5. Pair it with the rest of the DLSS stack only after you measure the neural pass alone.
6. If you stream through GeForce NOW Ultimate, the cloud box is a 5080-class rig. Local laptop 5060 numbers assume aggressive Multi Frame Generation.
Leave Multi Frame Generation at a sane multiplier first. 6x looks heroic on a slide. It also means five of the six frames never existed in the engine.
Pro Tip: Record a 10-second clip of a player close-up with neural rendering off, then the same camera with it on, then flip between them at 100 percent crop. If pores and ear cartilage move while the underlying mesh stays put, the integration is doing what Nvidia described. If the bone structure itself drifts, the mask is too hot.
FAQ
Is the NBA 2K27 leak the same as the retail DLSS 5 toggle?
No. The leak is an unfinished runtime plus debug sliders. Retail 2K27 ships a developer-tuned path, a new driver, and no public intensity cocktail.
Can I run DLSS 5 on an RTX 4070 or 4090?
Not officially. The shipping stack is Blackwell-only. Community patches exist for Ada. They will break. They may trip overlays. Treat them as lab toys.
Why did frame rate fall by half in Control?
The leaked path ran a heavy FP8 model on character pixels on top of the existing frame. No Multi Frame Generation. No shipping optimizations. Half is the honest cost of that build.
Will more games get official DLSS 5 this year?
Nvidia named a longer list at GTC. At launch week, 2K27 is alone. Expect a slow drip, not a day-one flood. Studios need time to author masks so Cloud Strife does not come back as a mannequin.
Where this goes next
Modders did Nvidia a favor and a problem at the same time.
The favor: everyone can now see that neural rendering is a lighting and material grade, not a mesh swap. The problem: the first public images were maxed sliders on games that never asked for them.
I think the tech survives if developers treat it like color grading. Tight masks. Conservative defaults. A clear off switch. 2K27 is the right first customer because the faces already came from a scan booth.
I do not think it belongs on every Steam library title in 2026. Stylized work should opt out. Competitive shooters should stay away from experimental DLLs. Anyone on last-gen silicon should keep DLSS 4 and wait.
The leak was sloppy packaging. The idea underneath is still the biggest change to the real-time pipeline since ray tracing left the demo reel. Just do not judge it by a Skyrim Nord who suddenly has Instagram skin.
Turn the slider down. Measure the frame time. Then decide if the ear cartilage was worth 30 fps.
